National App-Based Work Alliance Will Advocate for Solutions That Preserve Worker Independence and Access to Benefits
App-Based Work Alliance Congratulates President Biden and Vice President Harris, Encourages Administration to Embrace Modern Policies for Growing Independent Workforce
WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 20, 2023) -- Today, the App-Based Work Alliance, a national coalition dedicated to elevating the voices and needs of independent workers, issued the following statement on the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris:
“We congratulate President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on their historic achievement and look forward to partnering with their Administration to address the challenges facing independent workers. We urge the Biden-Harris Administration to consider the rapidly evolving needs of the 21st century workforce as they map out their course for public policy changes. The millions of Americans that depend on independent work have become important pillars in our communities as we combat COVID-19. This growing workforce needs modern policies that will give them access to benefits, while protecting their flexibility to earn independent income on their schedule. Modern portable benefits systems are long overdue and will help protect independent app-based workers throughout the country and provide benefits to those who need them. The App-Based Work Alliance welcomes the opportunity to work with the Biden-Harris Administration to support federal policies that support the growing on-demand economy.”
The recent passage of Proposition 22 in California demonstrates the widespread support for preserving flexible work with access to benefits. The broad support from drivers and voters across the political spectrum demonstrated that policymakers must find solutions that provide benefits to those who need them while protecting worker independence.
The App-Based Work Alliance was formed by several app-based platforms that represent millions of app-based workers, including DoorDash, Instacart, Lyft, Postmates, and Uber. Learn more about the App-Based Work Alliance here.
